Type Writer teaches touch typing with a hundred lessons that start on the home row and build up to full paragraphs. Pick the keyboard layout you use, read the on-screen key guide and type the text you see; every lesson keeps its own high-score table, ranked by the fewest mistakes and then by the fastest time.
Choose a lesson and press Start lesson. The text to type appears in the target box; an on-screen keyboard highlights the very next key. Type it, and the cursor moves on. A running clock, a progress bar and live figures for time, failures, accuracy and speed (WPM) show how you are doing the whole way through.
The hundred lessons are grouped into ten chapters, moving from single keys on the home row through the upper and lower rows, common words, capitals and punctuation, short sentences, numbers and symbols, and finally full paragraphs. Pick a chapter and then a lesson inside it. The lessons themselves are the same on every keyboard, so before you start choose the layout you are typing on — QWERTY, QWERTZ, AZERTY, Dvorak or Colemak — and the on-screen guide re-labels itself to match. With the layout right, the guide shows you exactly which physical key produces the next character.
A run counts two things: the number of failures (wrong keystrokes) and the total time. Accuracy is the share of keystrokes that were right; speed is measured in words per minute, counting five characters as a word. Press Backspace to correct and Enter at the end of a line. When you reach the end of the text the run is finished and its result is ready to save.
When the lesson ends, type a name (up to 20 characters) and press Save score. Your name, failures and time are sent to the server and added to that lesson's board. You can then Try again for another run, jump to the Next lesson, or Change lesson to pick another.
The board below the lesson shows the best runs for the selected lesson. Entries are ordered by the fewest failures first and then by the fastest time, so a clean run always beats a faster but sloppier one. Your freshly saved run is highlighted. The scores live in a file on the server, so they are permanent and the same for every visitor — they do not depend on your session. Below the board, a ticker scrolls through the top three of every lesson in turn, so you can see the strongest scores across the whole course at a glance.
The interface is available in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, chosen from the menu in the corner. Because your name and score are stored on the server to build the high-score tables, the app is marked blue (Server); the scores are kept in a file on the server, so they are permanent and the same for every visitor rather than tied to a session. Nothing else is collected and no account is needed. The counter in the corner is the same anonymous hit counter every tool in the suite uses. Questions or suggestions?
